Thanks, the car was origonaly equiped with a 4 speed and was replaced with the 3 speed by AMG I think. I have yet to confirm what exactly was done by AMG as they didn't keep the best records in the early years. I was told that they did replace the 4 speed auto with the 3 as the 3 was more robust and better able to handle the increased power output of the modified engines.

cool car! did it come with the black wheels from the factory?

it looks like the gated shifter is D-S-L - I suppose that could correspond to three speeds.

1981 SLC North American specification car was a 380SLC with big bumpers.

The car in the photos could be a 380 or 500 if its a European specification car, with the serial number you can quickly verify if its a 380 or 500.

In those days it was quite easy to AMG any car by color coordinating the various body panels, and installing a set of Ronal R9 wheels which were identical to the wheels on your car for the complete AMG look.

The early Benzes did not have 1st gear on the shift selector, especially that the car was usually starting in 2nd gear....its a 4 speed...there is switch under the accelerator pedal (its the kick down and from a stop it selects 1st gear) and it will start in 1st gear.

What color is the car? Dark Blue code 904?

AMG as people understand AMG today, did not exist in 1981, anyone could buy AMG body parts, wheels, go for the monochromatic paint scheme which was the AMG trademark of the time.

1981 was the last year of SLC's they were replaced in 1982 by SEC's which now are CL's.

With the serial number of the car you should know if its a 380 or 500.

The wheels are AMG PENTA wheels 16"x8" and they are actualy blue (matching the car) with a machined lip.

And yes that is the gated shifter for the 4 speed but this car is only a 3. The trany was swaped for the three that came with the 78 slc as it was a more robust unit.

You talk about this car as if it were yours.

The car is a 500 slc euro spec and was modified by AMG not just bolt on body kit.

The wheels are AMG PENTAS.

The car is only a 3 speed, transmition was swapped by AMG because the 3 was a stronger more robust unit.

The color is midnight blue code 904.

AMG up to 1991 (when mercedes baught them) was a tuning company like shelby or langenfelder or roush. And yes you could just buy body parts and wheels to make it look like an AMG but you couldn't tune it to drive like one. When driving this car there is no doubt that the car has been heavily tuned when you are bouncing off the rev limiter at 6200 rpm and 250kph 17 sec. after you left the line you know this is an AMG.

"6200 rpm and 250kph 17 sec"

Almost like a rocket compare to my 450SLC I had......... or even newer AMG.

But this SLC I say is one of the most enduring appealing auto made by MB in the history. This chassis came out in the late 60s as test mule, all the way selling until 1989. Which is a pretty long year.

Some say the convertible is the best looking = I don't think so, i think it looked the worse out of this 6 generations. But not this Coupe version.

A rally tuned spec with big Hella fog lights, lowered (there aren't much option in suspension upgrades for this chassis), fat 14" sport tires, fake rollcage, open exhaust, or might be with a newer 560 engine and 4 speed will makes me dieing for it.

Wow. Nice. You definitely don't see one of these everyday, and I wasn't even born yet when this came out.

Hey I was only 2 when this car was built. I didn't even know what an SLC was until I seen it, it was love at first site, once I took it for a drive there was no turning back.
